Choosing an Island Resort in Fiji

There are more than 30 island resorts in Fiji. Some of these island resorts occupy tiny uninhabited coral islands whilst others sit alongside a small cove beach hidden by rainforest and cut-off from civilisation on larger islands. All island resorts in Fiji pride themselves on their intimacy, their hospitable staff and the beautiful natural surroundings.

Most small island resorts offer bure style accommodation – individual open plan bungalows built from natural materials to reflect the traditional Fijian home. Bures have thatch roofs, high ceilings and wooden beams. However, staying on a small island does not necessarily convey intimacy - a couple of the resorts in the Mamanuca Islands have 150 + rooms.

The advantages of staying on a small island include intimacy, lack of commercial activity (usually) and often being surrounded by a stunning lagoon with excellent snorkelling and visibility. The disadvantages naturally are a lack of movement - you'll be restricted to the tours and dining offered by the resort, quite often with inflated prices. Water on these islands is precious and at times may be scarce.
