The majority of tourists visiting Tonga come specifically to enjoy water sports with some of the best game fishing in the South Pacific and excellent sea-kayaking options. Add to this some great scuba diving reefs and several exciting surfing breaks on Tongatapu, as well as being the most popular destination for sailing and to enjoy whale watching, it's no wonder that almost every tourist will end up in the water at some stage of their holiday.

Snorkelling in Tonga

The most accessible watersport in Tonga is snorkelling and so long as you have your own snorkelling gear you can enjoy snorkelling almost everywhere. All of the upmarket beach resorts provide snorkelling equipment for their guests and there are several tours originating from Nuku'alofa and Neiafu towns which include stops at some of the regions best snorkelling reefs. The lagoon islands of Tongatapu, Ha'apai and Vava'u all provide excellent year-round conditions for snorkelling with warm seas never colder than 22 degrees Celsius, and often reaching 28 degrees, sheltered lagoons and coral reefs with amazing colours and abound with masses of reef fish. You may even get the chance to hear the singing humpback whales or possibly even get a glimpse of one whilst in the water. Kayaking in Tonga

Tonga boasts a myriad of islands with protected lagoons, channels and bays and this all adds up to Tonga being a great destination for a kayaking holiday. There is a well established kayak company based in Nuku'alofa and offering all levels of guided tours around Tongatapu's lagoon. Vava'u is another great spot for kayaking with sheltered bays and small islands close together to explore on short excursions. All upmarket resorts offer complimentary sea-kayaks to its guests for exploring the vicinity.

Game Fishing in Tonga

With shallow lagoons dropping off into the deep Pacific Ocean, Tonga game fishing is absolutely fantastic with not only the big game of Marlin, Wahoo, Swordfish and Yellow-fin Tuna regularly caught but also Giant Trevally and Mahimahi high of the list of trophies. All regions in Tonga have good game fishing and you can charter boats from Queen Salote Wharf in Nuku'alofa.
