Backpacking in New Caledonia

.

Backpacking in New Caledonia is limited mostly due to the prohibitive prices and high standard of living in the country. Most backpackers visiting New Caledonia head out to the Loyalty Islands to marvel at the beaches and take in some cultural interaction and sightseeing, with tribal hut accommodation available.

Beach lovers can also head out to Isle of Pines with its laid back holiday atmosphere and here there are a couple of budget guesthouses. The island is easy to get to either by fast passenger ferry from Noumea (departs weekends and sometimes during the week), or its a short 25-minute flight from Noumea airport (multiple daily flights).

For those visiting Noumea, there is only one backpacker hostel which is located in the downtown district, with a couple of other good cheap accommodations in the lively Latin Quarter and out towards the beaches.
