Adventure holidays take on two different forms: adrenalin sports, for which scuba diving and surfing are included; and exploring off the beaten track. In Fiji, both of these types of adventure holidays are absolutely fantastic.

Soft Adventure Holiday Packages

If you're seeking soft adventure but prefer being guided and not having to worry about transport and where you're going to stay then consider one of the following recommended Fiji adventure holidays.

The Yasawa Travel Pass is an excellent option for those who are looking for beaches, to meet other travellers but also to explore some of the more remote islands in the Yasawas where you can easily visit local villages and go on self guided hikes. The Yasawa Travel Pass allows travellers to visit up to fifteen different islands, with each having simple accommodation often in traditional bures and where you can visit the local fishing villages and immerse yourself in the culture. Several of the islands also have excellent hills and mountains for walking.

This flexible pass enables travellers to visit any one of ten islands along the beautiful Yasawa chain of islands and stay at any of the 16 accredited budget beach bures along the way. This is the best region in Fiji for meeting fellow travellers, for relaxing on gorgeous beaches and dabbling in a little snorkelling.

A similar experience is available on the main island of Viti Levu but by mini coach. The Feejee Experience tour departs Nadi three times a week and travels around the main island for four days stopping along the way to enjoy guided soft adventures. The Feejee Experience is the only overnight tour that explores the main island of Viti Levu and gets you to some wonderful beach locations, historical sites, traditional villages, tropical rainforests, and along the remote Sunshine Coast. Hop-on and -off or take the full tour.

Another option to consider is the Tui Tai cruise which sails along the southern coast of Vanua Levu crosses Buca Bay to explore the cluster of islands off the north tip of Taveuni, including a trip to Taveuni itself. This tour includes snorkelling, kayaking, hiking and mountain bike rides.

Tui Tai is an adventure cruise around northern Fiji aboard a converted schooner with bunk beds and cabins. The emphasis is on exploring, with river kayaking, hiking a crater and snorkelling in an atoll plus hiking and cycling to waterfalls on Taveuni Island.

Adrenalin Sports

Fiji has some fantastic adrenalin sports both on land and in the water. Fiji has world class surfing, mostly breaking over treacherous coral reefs and therefore for experienced surf junkies only. The Mamanuca Islands, Beqa Lagoon and Kadavu all have exceptional breaks. Scuba diving in Fiji is also brilliant and considered up there amongst the best places in the world. Soft corals are its speciality but pelagics are also on the menu with the Beqa Lagoon shark dive being a big hit with adrenalin lovers and some awesome drift dives along both the Rainbow Reef (Taveuni) and Astrolabe Reef (Kadavu).

On land, the two centres for adventure are Nadi and Pacific Harbour. In Nadi you can do tandem sky diving from up to 4.300 metres, or enjoy mountain bike trails in the Nausori Highlands.  Pacific Harbour has zip-lining through the rainforest, and slightly inland there's white water river rafting (Grade II - III) available year-round on both the Lua and Navua rivers but best from December to May during the heavy rains of Fiji's wet season.

Exploring the Fiji Islands - off the beaten track

The best place to experience Fiji's untouched rainforest and some of the most traditional villages is surprisingly on the main island of Viti Levu, inland from Pacific Harbour. The Namosi region, and in particular the Sovi Basin, has ancient virgin forests and can be explored on 4WD drive or river tours.

Pacific Harbour & Beqa

Pacific Harbour on the south coast of the main island of Viti Levu is the best place for thrill seekers and active holidays. Inland you'll find adventure 4WD tours exploring virgin tropical rainforest whilst river cruises visit remote villages and waterfalls and there's even a zip-line tour to get up close to the rainforest canopy. There's fantastic white water rafting expeditions which hit their peak after the summer rains in April. Offshore, the famous Beqa shark dive is one of the great diving experiences Fiji has to offer (tours depart Pacific Harbour), and there are jet-ski adventures across the lagoon also visiting Beqa Island.

Kadavu

In the south of Fiji, accessible by plane from Nadi (40-mins), is Kadavu Island with some incredibly beautiful scuba diving reefs (Astrolabe Reef) and regions where manta rays can be seen in large numbers as well as well as having exceptional game fishing and where many of Fiji's big game records are held. It's also a great destination for kayaking adventures and immersing yourself in traditional village culture with excellent hiking trails and traditional villages to visit..
