Maui Travel Guide

On the dryer, leeward side of West Maui, luxury resorts have turned the barren lands into championship golf courses; in the nearly-undeveloped, dense rainforest of the windward side of the West Maui Mountains you can find acres of ferns and trees. To the east is the Haleakala Crater, where dense rainforest leads you into miles of tall eucalyptus, redwoods, and towering pine trees. The central valley is covered from end to end with sugar-cane; Maui is the only Hawaiian island that still has a significant sugar-cane crop, which has kept the developers out of the valley, insuring you acres of incredible tropical vistas. Maui nightlife is at its best in lively, quaint Lahaina, an old Whaling Village this is now home to shops, restaurants, art galleries and a fun night out on the town.

If you're looking for adventure, hire a car and drive along the ancient jungle road to Hana, or explore the impossibly beautiful volcanic crater of Haleakala. For even more adventure, Maui offers windsurfing, whale watching, snorkelling, diving, and hiking. The island's waters are alive with a huge variety of marine life, including hundreds of species found only in Maui's reef. From December to May (Hawaii's winter), up to 3,000 humpback whales visit the protected waters off Maui's south coast to breed. At the same time, big-wave surfing on Maui's North Shore is as awe-inspiring as it has been for more than 50 years. And although tourists abound in this second largest of the Hawaiian islands, the local indigenous communities thrive and welcome you to enjoy their unique hospitality.

Maui Travel Information

The main airport on the island is Kahului (OGG) on the north side of the island and this is where all main flights come in and out of. You definitely want a rental car on Maui. While there is cab service and a shuttle service here, they are few and far between, and outside of hiring a private car and driver, public transportation is pretty much non-existent.
