The latest development to grace Denarau Island is Port Denarau, a modern centre and marina complex built from corrugated iron and resembling an industrial sugar mill. The complex boasts half a dozen restaurants, some with views overlooking the silvery waters of Nadi Bay towards the stunning mountains.

Shops include the handicraft emporium of Jack’s (daily 7.30am-9pm), the trendy clothing outlet Wai Tui where you can buy sandals and snorkeling gear, Newsagency (Mon-Thurs 7am-7pm, Fri-Sat 7am-9pm), good for books and which also has a Post Fiji counter and Yee’s Deli, an expensive supermarket selling gourmet food.

You’ll also find a useful Westpac Bank with ATM machine. There’s a large public car park costing F$1.50 per hour beside the marina, departure point for most day tours and transfers to the Mamanucas and Yasawas.
