Backpacking in Vanuatu

.

Vanuatu is good destination for adventurous backpackers but a rather poor choice for those looking for a beach to laze around on and to meet fellow travellers. The main interest is in exploring the islands culture and traditional villages and to visit the rainforest and dive sites on Espiritu Santo, or the Volcano on Tanna Island.

Tanna Island

Without doubt the most exciting island to visit for backpackers is Tanna, a southern island renowned for its village culture as well as Mount Yasur, the world's most accessible active volcano.

Espiritu Santo

Espiritu Santo is known for its hiking trails and virgin rainforest. There are two Conservation Reserves on the island with good hiking trails and several tour companies offer day trips to visit waterfalls, caves and inland blue holes.

Port Vila & Efate Island

The main island of Efate has established itself as a soft adventure centre with more commercialised tours including zip lines through rainforest, abseiling down waterfalls, 4WD and buggy tours along the coast and horse riding in rural locations. Several small resorts around the island make a pleasant spot for soft adventure holidays.
