Tahiti Islands, a dramatic collection of high rugged islands and stunning atolls with overwater bungalows and one of the most romantic getaways in the world, but also very expensive. French Polynesia is also a good scuba diving destination.

To the west, beyond Fiji and closer to Australia is New Caledonia, also French, with its sophisticated capital town Noumea rivalling Apia as the nicest South Pacific port. Extending north is Vanuatu Islands, another Melanesian island but with a raw and very traditional tribal culture and also boasting active volcanoes and some excellent scuba diving sites including accessible WWII wrecks making it an exceptional destination for hardened adventurers.

In the north Pacific lies the Hawaii Islands where you can mingle with the crowds at fashionable Waikiki Beach, play golf on a championship golf course in Maui, visit the active Volcano National Park on the Big Island or explore the tropical rain forest teaming with hundreds of waterfalls on Kauai.
