Location

Highlights
Then main town of Nukualofa has several interesting sites related to Tonga's proud Kingdom and a decent handicraft centre where you could arrange to view tapa cloth making, but little else of significant interest. Offshore from Nukualofa are the tiny coral islands so typical of the South Pacific. Most of these are undeveloped - only two have boutique resorts - and make a fantastic place for exploring with local boatmen available from the wharf. Archaeological buffs will marvel at several impressive ancient structures along the east side of the island, whilst the best beaches and some good snorkelling and surfing can be found on the west coast at Haatafu.
Travel Info
The international airport is located on the south coast, about 20-minutes by road into Nukualofa Town. Buses head out of Nukualofa in all directions and make for good and cheap exploring, or you can hire a taxi for more organized sightseeing. Nukualofa has several tour companies offering day tours around the island. To visit the islands, small boats can be hired from the wharf in Nukualofa but there are no organized day cruises around the lagoon.
Accommodation
Nukualofa has a decent assortment of hotels and guesthouses which make a good base for sightseeing, but most holiday-makers are better off staying in one of the small resorts in the offshore shore islands or on the west coast.
