Introduction Tonga is tiny kingdom, the last in the South Pacific, with a charming and laid back South Seas lifestyle . The 171 small coral and limestone islands are found in three compact groups located east of Fiji and south of Samoa and offer some of the best value romantic holidays in the South Pacific. The islands are very religious with Sunday a strict day of rest.

Highlights
Tonga is a relative backwater in tourism which is much of its appeal. The people are very friendly towards outsiders but exploring can be frustrating at times with little information available and tours and services being unreliable. In Tonga, it's a good idea to just go with the flow. Tongatapu is the main island with the capital Nuku'alofa and the small international airport. The tiny offshore coral islands have a couple of romantic beach resorts with exquisite beaches and snorkelling lagoons. A 30-minute flight to the north of Tongatapu is the even more laid back Ha'apai Group. This scattering of islands has traditional fishing villages but only one beach resort. The Vava'u Group, 20-minutes flight further north is the main centre for adventure tourism - this myriad of islands and secluded bays has world class sailing and game fishing, excellent snorkelling and is the best place in the South Pacific to view humpback whales (May to Sep).
Travel Info
From North America and Europe, the easiest way to visit Tonga is on the twice weekly Air New Zealand service from Los Angeles, stopping over in Samoa enroute. Otherwise, there are daily flights from Auckland with either Air New Zealand or Pacific Blue, the latter also having direct flights from Sydney. Air Pacific fly twice weekly from Nadi in Fiji. Tonga is a reasonably cheap destination to visit on holiday with good value for money accommodation, although getting around can prove a little costly.
Accommodation
Tourism on Tonga is very small in numbers with no large hotels outside of the capital Nukualofa and just a handful of beach resorts to stay at around the islands. Those you'll find have a very charming atmosphere where you'll be treated as a friend more than a guest.
