Papeete is the capital town of French Polynesia located a few miles north of the international airport at Fa'a. The town is a bustling cosmopolitan centre with good shops and restaurants, a lively handcraft market and a picturesque harbour where fast passenger ferries depart for neighbouring Moorea Island.
The majority of accommodation in Tahiti is found in and around Papeete and along the sunny west coast. There is a reasonable smattering of budget pensions along the south coast and in the remote wilderness of Tahiti Iti.
