It's isolation and small size is its curse, with most items imported from New Zealand or Australia (including a large proportion of food) and high transportation costs. # 2 - Fiji Islands

Fiji has the most accommodation of all South Pacific destinations with a great variety in choice, and with very low wages paid to its employees, Fiji is the cheapest destination for accommodation only. However, inflated food prices in the offshore islands and little choice of dining other than resort restaurant coupled with high travelling costs to reach these islands makes Fiji more expensive than the eye first meets.

# 3 - Cook Islands

Despite using the New Zealand dollar which has increased both the standard of living in the Cook Islands and the cost of goods, Rarotonga has a great many affordable accommodations and competition has kept prices relatively low. What makes this a great place for a good value holiday though is its many independent restaurants around the island and self catering bungalows meaning you're not at the mercy of the resorts high dining prices as with many South Pacific islands.

# 4 - Samoa

Samoa has little accommodation outside of Apia which falls in the affordable holiday bracket. There are a couple of good choices around the islands but the most affordable holidays are for those prepared to stay in Apia where there are plenty of good restaurants, and to take a sightseeing tour around the island.

# 5 - Vanuatu

Despite a high subsistence lifestyle and low wages, Vanuatu is not an affordable holiday destination to visit. The most affordable place to stay is in Port Vila which has plenty of competition for beds, cheap transport but food and dining out is expensive. Flights to the outer islands are costly and prices on these islands are inflated to compensate.

# 6 - New Caledonia

New Caledonia is a French Territory renowned for its expensive lifestyle, but surprisingly accommodation is not vastly over-priced as it is in French Polynesia. What drags affordability down is its expensive food prices and travelling costs.

# 7 - French Polynesia

Accommodation in French Polynesia is definitely sold at a premium, especially so on Bora Bora. Moorea is the best choice for an affordable holiday - it's easy to get to by ferry from the international airport and there's several good affordable hotels with a selection of restaurants to for dining out.
