Introduction
Samoa comprises two separate and independent countries - Samoa and American Samoa. Samoa offers a very traditional way of life with picturesque beaches and several unique scenic attractions as well as the beautiful town of Apia which makes an interesting holiday base. There are only a handful of resorts around the islands but these offer good value for money - there is also a large assortment of simple beach fales (huts) which makes Samoa a great destination for budget travellers. American Samoa has virtually no tourism infrastructure although it has several breathtaking National Parks protecting its beautiful tropical rainforest and wild coastline.

Highlights
Apia is a pretty seaside town and although there is no beach, there are several interesting attractions and lively restaurants and bars to justify a brief stay. Both Upolu and Savaii islands have good sightseeing with the circular coastal road passing through numerous traditional villages, up and down tropical mountains and past waterfalls and coastal lookouts. Upolu has several lovely beaches as well as some excellent surfing breaks off the coast, whilst on Savaii, Manase Beach is the main tourist region and serves both holiday-makers and backpackers.
Travel Info
Pacific Blue have direct flights from Auckland, Brisbane and Sydney, whilst Air New Zealand offer twice weekly flights from Los Angeles, connecting on to Europe, and daily flights to Auckland. Samoa is one of the cheapest destinations to visit in the South Pacific with good public transport, plenty of budget accommodation and reasonably priced food.
Accommodation
With plenty of of beach fales (although the majority have poor communication), Samoa is a popular place to visit amongst backpackers. There are only a handful of boutique resorts, plus one large resort with over 200 rooms, making Samoa a relatively unexplored tourist destination. Almost half of all visitor arrivals to the country are Samoans visiting from overseas and flights can often be full during Christmas and other holiday periods.
