Introduction
Grand Terre is a huge mountainous island over 400-km long, almost 20,000 sq-km in size and surrounded by the worlds second longest coral reef. The island was originally part of Australia that fell off 140 million years ago and drifted a little over 1200-km to the east of Brisbane and just north of the Tropic of Capricorn.

Highlights
Grand Terre offers remote wilderness and high mountains with excellent opportunities for adventure tours, hiking and horse riding. However, that's not what most international tourists visit the South Pacific for, and because it lacks the pristine beaches found elsewhere, tourism is minimal.
Travel Info
Grand Terre is vast, taking over 6-hours by road to reach the northern beach town of Poum from Noumea, and 2-hrs to reach the south coast. Roads are good with plenty of small towns along the dry farmlands of the west coast, but sparser amenities on the wet east coast. There are daily flights from Noumea to Kone Town on the west coast and Touho, just south of Hienghene, on the east coast.
Accommodation
With only a handful of beaches, the best at the very top of the island some 7-hrs drive from Noumea, accommodation on Grand Terre is more geared towards adventure tourism than offering a romantic holiday escape.
