Independent review for Bayside Resort in the Yasawa Islands of Fiji

bayside resort hotel location picture

Bayside Resort Fiji is closed for business. It is a tiny paradise on the stunning island of Waya. Set in a private beach setting overlooking the stunning mountain ridge above Yalobi Village, this traditional resort has just two bures ensuring a peaceful holiday away from commercial tourism. With no generator, no electricity and kerosene lamps at night, this is an escapists dream with a picturesque beach, excellent snorkelling and is a great base for hikers who want to explore the hills of Waya. However, amenities here are basic making this a place for very independent travellers ONLY.

Hotel Amenities

Natural spring water offers a constant supply of fresh drinkable water. There is no shop on the island and supplies are limited so bring nibbles and supplies of sunscreen and medical supplies.

The restaurant serves a set meal plan in the high roof thatch bure with sand floor, ensuring an intimate experience to fit in with the resorts image. Vegetarian meals can be provided with prior notice only.

The beach at Bayside Resort is of fine white sand and is backed by coconut palms giving shade from the daytime sun. The beach is about 200 metres long and is flanked by black volcanic rocks on either side. It is possible to walk around the southern point to the stunning twin bay and sand spit connecting Waya and Wayalailai (20 minutes walk) and also around the northern point where the beach extends for almost a mile alongside Yalobi Village (20 minutes walk). The lagoon infront of Bayside is quite shallow at low tide, but still possible for swimming, and the coral reef begins about 50 metres from shore making snorkelling very accessible.

Guides can be hired to explore the mountain tracks that meander around Waya Island, crossing the grassy hills of the interior which connect the four villages on the island and also scaling the mountain peaks (Batinareba at 510 metres) or following the picturesque coastlines. These treks can take anything from a one hour stroll to full day hikes. The village hosts a twice weekly meke and traditional feast which guests can attend. Boat trips around the island and to the outer reef for snorkelling can be arranged. Getting to bayside is easy - the 200-seater fast catamaran, Yasawa Flyer, departs Denarau Marina in Nadi every day at 8.30am reaching Bayside Resort at 11am and departing Bayside in the afternoon at 3.30pm returning to Nadi at 5.30pm.
