Highlights
Aitutaki offers stunning beaches and a dreamy South Pacific atmosphere making it a popular choice with romantic couples as well as budget travellers looking for a less commercial destination than Rarotonga.
Travel Info
There are five to eight daily flights to Aitutaki from Rarotonga, but no passenger ferry. The large island is the only one with villages (21 islets around the lagoon edge are uninhabited) although there is no public bus around the island. Car and moped hire is readily available, there are a couple of independent restaurants, a shop and supermarket in the main village. Four tour companies offer day cruises around the lagoon or you can hire a private water taxi.
Accommodation
Most accommodation is on the main island of Aitutaki between the main village of Arutunga and Ootu Point where day cruises to the lagoon depart. There are only two places to stay on islands: Aitutaki Lagoon Resort which lies across the channel from ootu Point and isolated Akaiami Paradise.
